The Quest For Airbrush Answers

IV

Here's the fourth page of different questions I've had thrown at me by you nice people out there.

Q: Awesome site so many good tips..I am a beginner airbrush tattooist and have large events coming up. My problem is in working the figures i have 5 hours to get through 4,000 people! 5% of crowd. Firstly in your experience is it even possible? I have been told i need 26 sprayers 6 booths and as you can imagine alot of airbrush guns and compressors etc. I have nothing to start and I need to purchase it all. I saw your answer on the spectrum changers would they be any good. These events are every weekend and so i dont mind investing in the equipment. Knowing which equipment would be good :) If you have any info in regards setup and equipment it would be a life saver. I have tried to find a class without luck in our area. I have been searching like crazy on the net and came across your site. I am interested in your cd-rom and further instruction. appreciate your time
A: Thanks for the good words! We really love what we do and we enjoy watching this industry grow. Ok, to answer your questions:
  • 4,000 people in 5 hours is a tall order, even with an experienced crew and the best equipment. We usually estimate 3 minutes per tattoo, so the math works like this: 1 artist can reasonably paint 20 tattoos in 1 hour. You can squeeze more in, but this is a reasonable estimate for someone who is new to the art. In 5 hours, one artist can paint approximately 100-120 tattoos. In order to accomplish your 4,000 people in 5 hours, you will need 33 artists. You can work one person per airbrush, with up to 4 people per airsource (CO2 or compressor). That would be 8 complete airbrush systems/booths to accomodate all of those artists and patrons.
  • I can help you purchase the equipment, but I need to check on the availability of the systems in stock. I don't know how fast they can ship out. The systems are as follows:
    Professional Tattoo System $1645.00 each
Includes 4 Iwata Eclipse airbrushes w/ hoses, four brush manifold, moisture trap, regulator, small quiet compressor with auto shut off, Tattoo stencil package (50 stencils), 2oz black tattoo ink, 1 oz each of red, blue and yellow, 4 bottle adapters, instructions, sample sheets, carry case.
Extra bottles of tattoo ink are available for: 1/2 oz $11.00 each, 1 oz $15.00 each, or 4 oz $50.00 each
I'll have to check on the shipping costs for all of this.
  • As for the Spectrum Color Changers: I've never used one myself, but I've heard from other airbrushers that they waste a lot of ink. Since ink is so expensive, I've stayed away from them.
  • We can help with instruction. We offer classes in Kansas City and I know of a couple of classes available in Ohio, as well.

Q: I actualy have an answer- often on your 'burning questions'people ask about tattos that last for over a month. The product they are refering to is sometimes called 'black henna.' It is truely a coal tar dye called PPD and is TOXIC!!! It should NOT be used! It should be avoided at all costs!! this website http://www.hennapage.com/henna/ppd/index.html has so much info on PPD. (the main site has much info on henna!) Please alert people that they should not use this product and should avoid it at all costs!!
A: Yes, we know about the ugly things black henna can do to a person's skin. We actually had a little boy who was screaming terrified to get one of our tattoos because of his last "tattoo" experience. They had been in Mexico and had a dragon "henna tattoo" put on his little arm. It burned him so badly that he still carried a dragon-shaped scar a year later. The burn was so bad after only a short time on the skin that he will probably have that dragon for life. Not everyone might have the same violent reaction he did, but it's still very toxic and we preach the dangers to anyone who will listen. Many thanks for your voice of info and concern!
